Description

TPU64D 3D Printing Filament

3D META's TPU64D 3D printing filament is a high-hardness, semi-rigid thermoplastic polyurethane for functional parts that need TPU's resilience without the soft, rubbery feel of standard flexible TPU. At Shore 64D hardness, TPU64D sits between flexible TPU and rigid engineering plastics — delivering tough, near-rigid prints with excellent impact resistance, abrasion resistance and long-term durability. It's ideal for snap-fits, gears, bumpers, sporting goods and any part that needs to take a hit and bounce back. Like all 3D META filaments, TPU64D is manufactured to strict quality standards and supplied on recyclable plastic spools.

Key Features of TPU64D 3D Printing Filament

  • High Shore 64D Hardness: Significantly stiffer than typical flexible TPUs — close to rigid engineering plastics with retained toughness.
  • Outstanding Impact Resistance: Absorbs sudden loads and impacts without cracking or shattering.
  • Excellent Abrasion Resistance: TPU's hallmark wear performance, ideal for parts in contact with abrasive surfaces.
  • Manufactured with High-Quality Materials: Premium thermoplastic polyurethane base for reliable extrusion and consistent mechanical performance.
  • Good Chemical and Oil Resistance: Resistant to many common solvents, oils and greases found in mechanical environments.
  • Strong Layer Adhesion: Excellent inter-layer bonding produces durable, fatigue-resistant parts.
  • Strict QA Manufacturing: Every batch is checked for diameter, hardness and print performance.

Applications for TPU64D 3D Printing Filament

TPU64D suits engineering, industrial and sporting applications where strength, toughness and impact resistance all matter:

  • Snap-Fit Assemblies: Living hinges, snap-fits and clip mechanisms that need to flex slightly without breaking.
  • Wheels, Rollers and Gears: Wear-resistant mechanical parts that benefit from TPU's abrasion resistance and toughness.
  • Bumpers, Stops and Guards: Impact-absorbing parts for tools, equipment and protective applications.
  • Sporting Goods: Cleats, grips, guards and protective gear that need durability and impact resistance.
  • Industrial Tooling: Rollers, bushings and contact parts in workshop and production environments.

Note: TPU is hygroscopic — drying before every print is essential for clean extrusion. A direct-drive extruder is recommended, although TPU64D's stiffness makes it far more forgiving on Bowden setups than soft TPU.

Storage and Drying for TPU64D Filament

TPU absorbs moisture rapidly and prints best when thoroughly dried:

  • Store in a Cool, Dry, Dark Environment: Use airtight containers or vacuum-sealed bags with fresh desiccant at all times.
  • Dry Before Every Print: Use a filament dryer, food dehydrator or enclosed 3D printer at 70°C for a minimum of 5 hours.

Why Choose 3D META's TPU64D 3D Printing Filament

Print Settings

  • Nozzle Temperature: 230–250°C
  • Bed Temperature: 50–60°C
  • Print Speed: 20–40 mm/s (slower for best surface finish and dimensional accuracy)
  • Cooling: 50–100% part cooling
  • Retraction: Short and slow (1–2 mm direct drive); reduce further if stringing occurs
  • Extruder: Direct drive recommended; Bowden workable thanks to the higher stiffness
  • Bed Surface: PEI or textured plate; no adhesive required in most cases
  • Drying: 70°C for a minimum of 5 hours before printing

FAQs

1. What does Shore 64D hardness mean?
Shore 64D sits at the upper end of the TPU hardness range — much stiffer than typical flexible TPU (which is usually measured on the softer Shore A scale). TPU64D feels close to rigid plastics like PETG, but with TPU's superior impact resistance and toughness.

2. What temperature should I print TPU64D at?
Print at 230–250°C with a heated bed at 50–60°C. Print speeds between 20–40 mm/s give the best results; harder TPUs can run a little faster than soft TPUs but still benefit from controlled, steady extrusion.

3. Do I need a direct-drive extruder?
Direct drive is recommended. TPU64D is stiffer than soft TPUs and is more forgiving on Bowden setups, but a direct-drive extruder with a constrained filament path will deliver the most consistent results.

4. How is TPU64D different from soft TPU (like TPU85A or TPU90A)?
TPU64D is much harder and stiffer — closer to rigid plastic than rubber. Use TPU64D for structural, impact-absorbing parts; use TPU85A or TPU90A for flexible, elastic, rubber-like parts.
